Originally, it was going to be "You can't fight evil by becoming evil", but that seemed a bit strong for the situation they're talking about here. It also read way too vague for something that needed to be concise. Explaining what he meant by "becoming evil" without sounding like he was being too harsh on the kid would have required way more talking than this scene calls for.
